Tina Kim Gallery is pleased to present YEONDOO JUNG: LOCATIONS as the inaugural show in its new location in the Chelsea Arts Tower. This exhibition includes photographs from the artist's acclaimed Location Series (2005 – 2007) as well as a conceptually related film.
Recipient of the prestigious 2007 Artist of the Year award given by the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Jung approaches photographic practice from a painterly perspective. Finding strict documentary photography limiting and digital manipulation deceitful, he utilizes old-fashioned prop making techniques and scenery construction to create landscapes that are to his own specifications. The result is the vivid and striking Location Series. By juxtaposing artificial and natural elements, he creates stage sets that are both grounded in reality and entirely divorced from it. A sense of nostalgia permeates these photographs; it is as if they are one scene from the narrative of an Old Hollywood film or a faded remembrance.
